STUDIENGRUPPE INFORMATIONSDESIGN (SI)
Burg Giebichenstein, University of Art and Design Halle

STATEMENT

Structure is power is unavoidable. Studiengruppe Informationsdesign (SI) investigates the social and political potentials of design to articulate the conditions of today by responding to the past that today shapes our future, be it algorithmic or otherwise. The most underrated algorithm being to go talk to the people who deal with the problem every day, to work with them and to learn from them. SI focuses on design that is not only about social effects but equally the social conditions of its production. It attempts to be precise in descriptions but remains generous, humble and open in its choice of media, form and discourse. As a space for practical experiments, SI actively supports collaborative modes of production and reflection.

ACTIVITIES

You can find details on this semesters’ assignment here. To get an overview of current, previous and upcoming events and dates, please check our calendar or visit our Instagram-channel. And to get a brief insight into some of our projects, please visit the Project Index.

EXTRACURRICULAR LECTURE SERIES AND ROUNDTABLE

The Extracurricular Lecture Series is a format that confronts ourselves with pressing social questions and aims at deepening our understanding for political mechanisms, social dependencies and their societal consequences in the context of design activities. The current program can be found here. An ongoing documentation and contextualisation of previous conversations can be found on our Roundtable website.

MATERIAL

Out of an understanding of design as a discipline that rather (re)connects existing knowledges, we consider all references, all thoughts, investigations and sketches “material”. Material forms new material. We store material here.
